Today we are pleased to introduce to you the teams participating in development of the BRICS Youth Energy Outlook 2019 from the North-West University, South Africa

The North-West University (NWU) is a South African university with three campuses at Potchefstroom, Mahikeng (Previously Mafikeng) and Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. In Potchefstroom is the head office of the University. With its merged status, the North-West University became one of the largest universities in South Africa.

As part of the preparation for the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019, we interviewed the team of the North-West University to make you know them better.

— How did you know about the BRICS YEA and the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019?

We learnt about them from Facebook after the first BRICS YEA summit that was held last year (2018) at Moscow.

— In your opinion why should the young people from the BRICS countries cooperate?

The young people are the future. Having the youth of BRICS countries working together means the bond between these countries will strengthen. Strong bonds will result in confident sharing of knowledge, experience and resources.

—  Which goal should have been reached in the coming years to achieve global sustainable development in the whole world?

Goal number #7 of the United Nations General Assembly’s Sustainable Development Goals: Affordable and clean energy.

 — How do you evaluate the role of the BRICS YEA in the achieving global sustainable development?

Excellent thus far because they advocate for energy efficiency and energy saving.

— Which achievements of the digital era could pose a threat to the global energy development? How can the young generation face these threats?

Grid modernization is one of the digital era achievements that could pose a threat to the global energy development through cyber-attacks. The young generation can face these threads by ensuring that energy security is increased massively.

We continue to introduce you to the developers of the BRICS Youth Energy Outlook 2019. The next team represents the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar, one the great captains of Indian Industry established this institute to provide a close interaction with industry, and a strong emphasis on basic and applied research. From 1956, Thapar Institute has grown in size. Now the campus spawns over 250 acres with lush green environment.

As part of the preparation for the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019, we interviewed the team of the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology to make you know them better.

— How did you know about the BRICS YEA and the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019?

Dr. Amandeep Singh Oberoi attended the BRICS YEA Summit-2018 at Moscow and got introduced to BRICS YEA. He was in touch with BRICS YEA thereafter and the opportunity to contribute to Outlook-2019 came through an email from the BRICS YEA.

— In your opinion why should the young people from the BRICS countries cooperate?

Youth is always foreseen as future of any country. If globally we want to see the change in the society, we believe the seed has to be sown at the youth level to reap the fruit of change later.

— Which goal should have been reached in the coming years to achieve global sustainable development in the whole world?

There are 14 Sustainable Development Goals reported in the UN Agenda 2030. We are particularly concerned about clean energy development and storage. We strongly believe that no single renewable energy source could cater to the global energy demand and neither it is sustainable to achieve the same. According to our team’s vision, combination of two or more individual renewable energy sources (or Hybrid Systems) are the need of the hour.

— How do you evaluate the role of the BRICS YEA in the achieving global sustainable development?

BRICS YEA is a wonderful platform to bring together young researchers from the BRICS countries and exchange technology/ideas/resources etc. Also, BRICS YEA could play a vital role in contributing towards formulating the energy related policy by respective governments, which in-turn, would help in meeting the UN AGENDA 2030.

— What would you like to place emphasis on during your work on the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019? Why?

Our main emphasis would be bringing awareness among the policy makers regarding the green and clean energy needs of the society. It is very important to understand that not all the clean energy sources are green and not all the green energy sources are 100% sustainable.

— In your opinion what’s the main principle that makes your teamwork successful?

We are a fully dedicated and multi-disciplinary team with varied expertise. The inspiration to work together comes from pain of the society and our zeal to make an impact to eradicate societal evils.

— What contribution to your team experience do you hope to get during your work on the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019?

While searching for the material for the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019 our team came across some vital announcements made by the government of India that otherwise would have gone missed from our attention. We believe that our angle of vision has broadened after carrying out this literature survey.

On June 18, Deputy Director of the UN Information center in Moscow V. Pavinsky met with representatives of the BRICS Youth Energy Agency at the UN Information center in Moscow. The theme of the meeting was the development of areas of cooperation, which the parties have already discussed in February 2019.

The Agency was represented at the meeting by the Chairman of the BRICS YEA Alexander Kormishin, Deputy head of the platform of the SDG , the Youth envoy SDG №7 Dulepova Arina and the head of the Press service of the Agency Ekaterina Krymkina.

The UN and the BRICS YEA have common interests under the SDG (Sustainable development goals). During the meeting the parties discussed the Agency’s projects. Thus, the key project of the BRICS YEA in the direction of the SDG in 2019 will be the Youth model of the BRICS Green technologies Platform. The aim of the project is to study the activities of New Development Bank (NDB) in financing clean and sustainable energy projects.

The сentral issue of the meeting was the possible options for cooperation in preparation for the BRICS YEA Summit-2019, namely the possibility of information and expert support from the UN Information center. They also discussed options for cooperation in the context of Russia’s chairmanship of the BRICS in 2020.

Established in 1948, the UN Information Center in Moscow is the oldest institution of the UN system in the country. One of the most important tasks of the center is to promote an “enlightened” understanding in Russia of the goals and priorities of the UN, including in the field of energy and youth policy, to promote greater contribution of the country to the activities of the Organization and the effective use of the experience and potential of the UN to improve the lives of Russians through the widespread dissemination of information about the work of the Organization among the population.

The following issues were discussed during the event:
— BRICS countries’ approaches to the digital economy;
— cooperation of countries on the digital agenda;
— key challenges of the industrial revolution 4.0.

The round table was attended by the chief adviser to the head of the Analytical center under the Government of the Russian Federation L. M. Grigoriev, representatives of the foreign Ministry, the South African Embassy in Russia, authorities, business, expert and academic community.

It should be noted that the BRICS YEA has set ambitious goals to expand its presence in the information space, using, first of all, the potential of its own online platform and expanding the opportunities for its participants. Today it is one of the few platforms where dialogue among young scientists and researchers on energy, energy policy and the sdgs is actively conducted.
